Peranap, Detak Indonesia—Hundreds of local workers from Semelinang Darat Village, Gumanti, and Peranap Village, Peranap District, Indragiri Hulu, Riau Province, are actively working every weekday at the PT Mustika Agung Sawit Gemilang (PT MASG) Palm Oil Mill (PKS).
Sustainable palm oil plantation management, both through the Palm Oil Mill (PKS) business in Indragiri Hulu (Inhu) Regency, Riau, brings harmony and a common vision and action to all parties.
PT Mustika Agung Sawit Gemilang (PT MASG) Office: Hundreds of local workers are seen working every weekday at the PT Mustika Agung Sawit Gemilang (PT MASG) Palm Oil Mill (PKS) in Semelinang Darat Village, Gumanti, and Peranap Village. Workers in the loading and unloading sector work in harmony with several platforms (temporary storage areas for fresh oil palm fruit bunches) similar to those used by community palm oil buyers/collectors. This collaboration with local palm oil plantation owners demonstrates greater efficiency in managing the plantation, allowing the company's resources to benefit the local community.
The implementation of PT MASG's palm oil mill (PKS), operating in Semelinang Darat Village, Peranap District, Inhu, Riau, has brought blessings to the residents of Semelinang Darat Village, Peranap Subdistrict, and Gumanti Village, as well as to the people of Peranap District in general. In addition to creating employment opportunities, the program can be tailored to local characteristics and priorities to improve community welfare, while maintaining a balance between ecological function and economic value.
"We, the Peranap District Government, would like to thank PT MASG for their role in transforming and increasing community incomes amidst rising fresh fruit bunch prices," said Umar SSos, Head of Peranap District, during a discussion in his office last Wednesday (January 22, 2020).
To Umar's knowledge, the company is not controlled by any third party regarding palm oil prices. The company remains committed to improving the economic welfare of the community and recruits many local workers for its PT MASG palm oil mill. Sub-district Head Umar has no doubts about the company's existence. PT MASG's palm oil mill, located in Semelinang Darat Village, which also includes Gumanti Village, Peranap District, Inhu, Riau, stated that it still complies with regulations.
Separately, the Acting Village Head of Semelinang Darat, Suhardiman, SSos, explained that PT MASG's presence has brought good fortune to the residents of Semelinang Darat.
"The company is relatively new, but it has been able to boost palm oil prices to Rp1,960 per kg, compared to prices at several agents, which are far below PT MASG's purchase price," he said.
"We, the Semelinang Darat Village Government and Gumanti Village, Peranap District, have never disputed the boundary between the two villages. Everything is based on an agreement between the village elders, the Sub-district Government, and the Regency Government," Suhardiman added.
Meanwhile, the Acting Village Head of Gumanti, Musliati, through his Village Secretary, Suryanto, acknowledged that most residents depend on PT MASG for their livelihoods. Some Gumanti residents work for the company, and some work as stevedoring crews. He stated that there is still no definitive agreement on the boundary between Semelinang Darat and Gumanti Villages. Although Semelinang Darat Village is a division of Gumanti Village, it has never been an issue, and that falls under the jurisdiction of the Sub-district Government and the Inhu Regency Government.
Meanwhile, PT MASG spokesperson, Zulkifli Panjaitan, SSos MM, stated that the company's goal, besides conducting business, is to contribute to the local economy. This means that boosting local incomes will impact the company's continued growth.
He stated that MASG has previously planned and managed its oil palm plantations sustainably. The company, which operates in the palm oil processing sector, is transforming the local economic ecosystem.
"Currently, around 80 percent of the 150 employees are local, while hundreds of Fresh Fruit Bunch (FFB) loading and unloading workers work outside the company's internal system. So, many heads of families depend on this company for their livelihood," added Zulkifli.
Besides the potential economic benefits to the community, the company maintains environmental sustainability, including the management of liquid waste from palm oil processing, by providing ponds. The waste management process, Zulkifli explained, is carried out following a process in accordance with regulations and instructions from the Environment and Forestry Agency (LHK). Likewise, the company strives to prevent smoke from billowing from the boiler chimney. Instead, the company employs sophisticated methods to prevent smoke from billowing from the chimney, including the burning of empty fruit bunches (Jankos), which are first crushed and then burned.
